Sense of Place

Sense of Place is a group exhibition that explores the expansive and layered meanings of place, running from August 1 to August 24, 2025 at Gallery 2727 (located at 2727 California Street, Berkeley, California 94703). It brings together a dynamic range of artists whose work reflects on how we define, inhabit, and are shaped by our environments—both physical and psychological.

Whether rooted in geographic specificity or an abstract sense of belonging, Sense of Place engages with the textures, memories, identities, and politics that inform our relationships to place. Artists examine locality through many lenses: from the deeply personal to the socio-political, from urban landscapes to imagined geographies, from markers of home to movements across borders. In a time of shifting terrains—climate, housing, diaspora, and identity—this exhibition offers a chance to reflect on the spaces we claim and the stories they hold.

The exhibition features work by Charlene Steen, Mary Coffield, Carianna Arredondo, Francesca Borgatta, Matthew Felix Sun, Katie Smart, and Rebecca Silver, with additional events and programs to be announced throughout the month.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, August 1, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, offering the public an opportunity to meet the artists, experience the work, and engage in conversation. Admission to the exhibition and all public events is free and open to all.
