Tension/Expansion represents paintings I’ve completed between 2015 and 2025 - though primarily from 2020 to 2025. This body of work is an exercise in turning inward. Much of my internal struggle has been about the feeling of restriction and pressure (only exacerbated by Covid). Where my life or psyche constricts, this painterly voice finds leverage, the force to push against it. Emotional, mental, and physical tension is an inherent part of my existence, and the need to express and unravel it is a visceral part of why I paint, a unique valve through which intensity can be released.
I am applying techniques for layering and masking developed while working in other media: silk painting with dye and wax resists, motion design and animated film (media with great propensity for creating flow states). Bringing these style preferences to current work with ink, pencil and pastel on wooden panels is a sort of synthesis. The interplay between opposing forces: hard edges with soft gradients, cool and warm color groups, light and dark spaces, have become a language to address intricacies of relationship - nuances of resistance, boundaries, containment, love and pain. Harmony, growth, and my impressions of the natural world; cycles of earthly processes - birth, blossoming, decay and death, are increasingly on my mind. There is some natural flow to how life moves that I am interested in, and it’s always a surprise. It can be trance inducing to create repeating shapes. The rhythmic movement of curves feels like magic to me - a way to make a little more space for light to shine through.
