I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, before moving to the Bay Area in 1999 to study at Stanford University. In 2004 I received my BA in Medieval Studies and Studio Art, with a focus in photography, and was awarded the Louis Sudler Prize for Creativity in the Arts. I then worked in several highly unsatisfying, vaguely art-related jobs in Los Angeles and New York before giving up and moving to abroad to volunteer for the Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles, photographing whale sharks and collecting behavioral data on sea turtles. Ultimately, I received an MSc in Biology from Oxford University, but found that I was entirely unable to forgo art and become a serious academic. While studying and working in biology (with varied jobs including molecular biology research, aquarium animal husbandry, and science editing), I continued to pursue a career in art, with a solo painting show in Dublin, and as a member of Magdalene Road Studios in Oxford. I returned to the Bay Area in 2015 and finally abandoned science in 2021 to work as a full-time artist.
I work primarily as a painter, photographer, and curator, with occasional forays into theatrical design. I am interested in using portraiture to explore issues of identity. Many of my works feature subjects with faces hidden or disguised, as a way of investigating how wearing a mask can allow us to inhabit a different persona, and whether there is some truth, some essential self, that is revealed even when our features are obscured.
This selection of portraits, created between 2022 and 2025, features members of my family, including my husband, children, nieces, nephews, siblings, and parents.
