“Public Sanctuary”

The bathroom wall speaks in many voices at once. A locked door creates a public sanctuary. The retreat of the bathroom has allowed generations of queer people to flourish. It fulfills a need for self-laboratory. It churns a culture of signalling and code that hijacks the decorum demanded by heteronormativity. With an ever increasing surveillance and impulse towards public performance, the work in this show speaks to the way culture and connection is often made behind closed doors.
